Fun'iki Ambient Glasses may be the simplest head wearable tech yet

Need a notification machine that is a lot simpler than Google Glass while still being equally fashionable? Then these pair of glasses might be the wearable tech for you.

Wearable tech comes in many forms and sizes nowadays, with the head wearable ones going under a separate category. But while many of these potential products go with the “wearable computer” concept, the new Fun’iki Ambient Glasses actually goes for something much simpler.

At a glance, the Fun’iki Ambient Glasses looks like an ordinary pair of glasses, and in fact, it largely is simply that. No tiny screens, no micro-projectors. What’s unique about this product though is how it combines lights, sounds and wireless connectivity to produce various notifications for your smartphone. It could for example, blink repeatedly a specific color pattern whenever someone calls, or combine an alarm sound and a certain light color to remind you of your upcoming lunch meeting.

While it is not as sophisticated as other head wearable tech, its simplicity still offers a considerable alternative. With their beep and blink concept, notifications would seem simple enough that it does not distract the user from the real world, yet specific enough that you exactly know what the notification is for. Besides, if you really want something even more precise, the Fun’iki Ambient Glasses can let you write messages, though it can only output them in Morse code (using light blinks and sound beeps of course).

Fun’iki Ambient Glasses is equipped with Bluetooth 4.0, six full color LED lights, speakers, an accelerometer, an ambient light sensor, and has a micro-USB port. A specialized app is used to create the notifications. The user can set what the notification is for, the triggers for that notification, and the actual sound and light pattern that would be used for it.

The product is a combined venture of the Japanese Institute of Advanced Media Arts and Sciences (IAMAS) and Paris Miki Holdings Inc., a Japanese eyewear business company. There are currently no announcements about its availability and price yet.
