MWC 2014: Samsung enters the fitness tracker segment with the Gear Fit

The Gear Fit is a fitness tracker that offers similar functionality to the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo smartwatches.

In addition to the Tizen-based Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo, Samsung has announced a new fitness tracker called the Gear Fit.

The device looks like a standard fitness tracker and comes with a 1.84-inch curved AMOLED touchscreen panel with wide viewing angles and a resolution of 432 x 128. The Gear Fit is a downsized version of the Gear 2 and gear 2 Neo, but it can still be used to view all incoming notifications from your connected device. The device connects via Bluetooth 4.0 and is certified IP67, which means that it is water and dust resistant.

The main focus of the Gear Fit is fitness tracking, and as such the device features a real-time heart rate monitor, in addition to a fitness coach that motivates you to move faster or slower based on your workout goals. The Gear Fit also syncs with Samsung’s S Health utility. Customizability is an issue Samsung addressed with the Gear Fit, as the device comes with an interchangeable wristband. The battery on the Gear Fit lasts for four days of normal usage on a single charge, which is twice as much as what the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo can manage. Overall, the Gear Fit seems like a better bet to the Gear 2. While it may not have the camera that is offered in the Gear 2, the form factor of the Fit allows it to be more comfortable when worn on a daily basis.

Samsung hasn’t revealed how much the Gear Fit will cost, but the wearable device will be available from April.
