Rare NES game fetches almost $100,000 in eBay auction

An eBay auction for Nintendo World Championships, one of the rarest NES games on the market, has tallied up a bid total of $99,902.

Would you pay almost $100,000 for this? One eBay bidder is about to.

The world of collecting as a whole is filled to the brim with surprisingly valuable products that fetch some mind-boggling prices. Everything from mint-in-box vintage action figures and–especially–video game collectibles can be savvy investments for die-hard and amateur collectors alike, commanding exorbitant payouts.

One such example is a recent eBay auction of an authentic Nintendo World Championships cartridge which has amassed an immense bid of $99,902.

The auction, which is now over, saw 382 total bids that amassed into the near-$100K price

What’s so special about Nintendo World Championships *you may be asking? It happens to be one of the rarest Nintendo games in existence, and has been coveted in the world of game collecting for quite some time. Other than its rarity, though, the game is pretty drab–as The Angry Video Game Nerd proved in the hilarious clip below.

Side-by-side comparisons of the rare Nintendo World Championships cartridges, of which the golden version is more rare and thus more valuable.

It’s also worth mentioning that the eBay listing isn’t even for the highly-sought after (and near-mythical) “gold cart” version of NWC that was limited to just 26 copies. This version is pretty scraggly-looking and has “Mario” scrawled upon it–but it does bear the telltale chip as well as the rectangular cut-out in the upper left corner.

In any case, it’ll be interesting to see if the winner will pay the bank-breaking sum for his cartridge, or if it was a rather pricey trolling session.
