Notorious and somewhat controversial Russian tech journalist Eldar Murtazin is back in the spotlight after making some interesting claims regarding Galaxy S5’s ETA, now suggesting Google’s Nexus line has a very feeble future.
Initially believed to be targeted mostly at nerds, hackers and people that for some reason are nuts about “vanilla” Android (I for one think some skins greatly improve the look and feel of the OS), Nexus devices have been met with uncontained excitement and joy especially following the first 7-incher’s debut.
It’s no secret, 2012’s Nexus 7 single-handedly jump-started a surprising craze, pushing the vast majority of Android OEMs to reconsider their stance on small, compact, affordable tabs, which are nowadays the only thing keeping Apple’s iPads from total world domination.
On the not so bright side, the first-gen Nexus 10 was hardly a box-office hit, which is why no sequel saw daylight in 2013. And then there’s the issue of the minuscule profit margins across the Nexus family, regardless if we’re talking about slates or phones.
For instance, how much do you reckon Google and LG make off N5 sales when the 5-incher costs $349 through the Play Store, a whopping 300 bucks less than its ever so slightly more gifted cousin, the G2? Peanuts, exactly.
Long story short, guys, we’ve been living the dream for the past few years, but it may be time to wake up soon. Apparently, the Nexus line in its entirety will be nixed in 2015, not before Google can refresh the N5 and N7 one last time. Or maybe replace the N7 with an N8.
What’s clear, at least according to Eldar Murtazin, is that, starting next year, “pure Google” lovers will only have Play Edition gizmos to rely on. The good news? There should be many of those, with swift software support and upgrades guaranteed. The bad? You’ll no longer get the privilege to pay mid-range prices for high-end material.
