The successor to the G Pro features a 6-inch FHD screen, 3 GB RAM and Android 4.4 KitKat, but LG is losing out by not including a QHD screen.
The latest rumor out of South Korea indicates that LG is looking to launch the successor to the G Pro as early as next month. While earlier rumors indicated a device with a 5.9-inch QHD screen, this rumor states that LG is considering a 6-inch screen with a FHD offering. Other rumored hardware details of the G Pro 2 include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800, 3 GB RAM and Android 4.4 KitKat.
The varying rumors mean that we just have to wait until the Mobile World Congress next month to find out the exact hardware the device will feature. But if LG does indeed decide to stick with an FHD screen, it would be limiting itself, as other manufacturers are looking to go with QHD offerings on their high-end devices.
Samsung is already said to be using a QHD screen on the Galaxy S5, and that device is said to come with a 5- to 5.2-inch screen. However, it is likely that LG could use a QHD panel on its flagship, the LG G3, which would be a direct rival to the Galaxy S5.
LG could gain an edge over Samsung by launching the G Pro 2 with a QHD screen, as Samsung isn’t set to launch the next-generation Galaxy Note device at least until November. Last year, HTC failed to seize the momentum with the HTC One, which was announced a month before the Galaxy S4, but wasn’t available in stores until after the Galaxy S4. This time around, LG has the advantage, and if it manages to offer the G Pro 2 with better hardware than the Galaxy Note 3, it could carve out more market share in the phablet segment.
