Acer seeks Windows Phone comeback, goes 64-bit in the Android scene

Not exactly a name to be reckoned with in today’s mobile industry, Acer is certainly looking to move up the ranks.

You win some, you lose some is the saying that should be going through the minds of Microsoft’s big kahunas these days, as Huawei noisily left the Windows Phone landscape and Acer is reportedly exploring ways to board the ship.

Redmond and the Taiwan-based PC expert crossed paths in the handheld market before, but we’re betting very few of you remember the Windows Phone 7.5 Mango-running Allegro. It’s likely that Acer execs themselves aren’t fond of the distant memory, since, well, no one bought the 3.6 incher. Ever.

But if things went so bad in the WP décor back in 2011, why is Acer pondering a return? It’s obvious times are different now, and a strong incentive is Microsoft’s removal of system licensing fees for devices smaller than 9 inches in diagonal.

Acer’s also been dishing out tiny, inexpensive Windows tablets for a few years now, and sooner or later, the hardware manufacturer had to take the collaboration to the next level. It’s worth pointing out that company officials are yet to map out their future plans, with Focus Taiwan and Gizbot basing their speculation on inside sources.

A “slew” of Acer-made Windows Phones may come to light “early next year”, with the pioneer tipped to target the low to mid-end niche. Taking things gradually and slowly is the wisest approach for both Acer and Microsoft, although we wouldn’t rule out seeing a flagship break cover eventually with perhaps Windows 10 pre-installed.

In unrelated news, Acer has just taken the wraps off its first 64-bit-compatible Android phone. The Liquid Jade S is however hardly a powerhouse, holding a mid-range 1.5 GHz MediaTek MT6752M processor, 2 GB RAM and 2,300 mAh battery under the hood.

Priced at the equivalent of roughly $225, the 5 incher sports a 720p display and tips the scales at a measly 116 grams. Squarely headed to Asian shores at the moment, the KitKat-running budget contender could swing by Las Vegas next month and set its Western goals during the glitzy Consumer Electronics Show. It’s a long shot, but possible.
