Microsoft Band back in (limited) stock today, initial demand exceeded expectations

Microsoft rarely releases exact product sales numbers, but as far as their first wearable piece is concerned, they want the world to know they’ve pushed “well beyond” 5,000 units to date.

While we wouldn’t exactly call it a fiasco, the highly anticipated commercial launch of Redmond’s rookie intelligent timepiece was clearly a disappointment. Although no one saw it coming, the Microsoft Band sold out online in a matter of hours a few weeks back, and is yet to return.

No one’s so naïve as to assume millions of fitness nuts threw their cash at MS without waiting for reviews or expert opinions, so it’s probably safe to guess the manufacturers had stock in the thousands of units order to begin with.

Based on the unequivocal statements of a company support employee, the precise figure was 5,000. Microsoft went on record almost immediately after the number came to light, and debunked the speculation, declaring their excitement regarding “the response we have seen to Microsoft Band”.

Also, while they reiterated their notorious numbers privacy, they wanted to set the record straight and underline the first production wave included a lot more than 5,000 Microsoft Band copies. How many more? 10,000? 20,000? Guess we’ll never find out.

But a second wave is coming, with “limited availability” scheduled for later today, November 18, at 1 PM EST online. How limited? Again, it’s impossible to know for sure. If history is any indication though, you’ll want to be at your PCs, with the F5 key ready to rumble no later than 2 PM EST.

In case you miss out on this launch do-over, Microsoft says “shipments of Microsoft Band will continue arriving in Microsoft Stores throughout the holiday season.” Translation – they’re getting them out as they build them, and as uncomfortable as it may sound, you’ll want to visit brick and mortar retail locations before giving up.

Needless to point out MS seems completely caught off guard by Band demand, possibly for the same reasons reviewers have not quite given the fitness tracker their blessing. Yes, the thing is packed with sensors, and thus the wet dream of any sports enthusiast/geek. But it’s far from a looker, and a pain in the behind when strapped to one’s wrist in terms of ergonomics.

Then again, it’s fairly cheap, at $200, and*keeps things simpler than “fancy” smartwatches. Ultimately, it’s a decent gizmo, just not a must-buy.
