The 705MB update brings over all the features of Lollipop to Nvidia’s gaming tablet.*
Android Lollipop is all the rage these days, and Nvidia is making sure owners of the SHIELD Tablet aren’t left waiting for the sweetest Android release yet. Mere days after Lollipop rolled out to Google’s Nexus devices, Nvidia has started updating the SHIELD Tablet to Android 5.0, making it the first non-Nexus tablet to get the new version of the OS (it’s technically the second, if people count the Nokia N1 that was announced today, though that tablet isn’t available yet.)
The update brings features like Nvidia’s Grid On-Demand gaming service, enhanced DirectStylus launcher, USB Y-cable support, an enhanced console mode with 4K output support, optimized GPS functionality, and better charging performance. Lollipop also enables OpenGL ES 3.1 and Android Extension Pack (AEP), both of which should allow developers to offer console*and near-desktop*class graphics in gaming titles.
Of course, Google’s Material Design is also present in the update, meaning SHIELD Tablet users should find a more pleasing UI waiting for them whenever they take a break from gaming on the device. Other changes include lockscreen notifications, a priority mode for call and message alerts, enhanced app performance thanks to the new ART runtime; the update is reportedly making its way over the air, and should pop up on most SHIELD Tablets before the month is over.
