Intel isn’t known for its fashion sense, but the debut of the MICA bracelet might just put the chip manufacturer on the radar of savvy accessory consumers.
The California-based chip maker announced today that it will have the MICA bracelet available to consumers before the busy holiday season.* MICA, short for “My Intelligent Communications Accessory,” was developed in collaboration with Opening Ceremony and the CFDA.* The product will also be exclusive to Barneys, but will come with an AT&T SIM card for connectivity on-the-go.* Tech-minded accessories aficionado will have complete data and SMS messages for two years with the SIM card, and that alone may justify the hefty $495 price tag.
The smart bracelet (Intel decided steer away from the smartwatch wagon) comes equipped with a 3G radio, a GPS chip with Tom integrated, and Yelp for finding out the best hangout spot.* A 1.6-inch OLED display curved display, as expected, rounds out the gadget nicely.
Functionality-wise, the MICA is family and friends focused, meaning transmission to the SIM cards are filtered so only the people that you want to appear on your wrist will show.* Things such as preset text responses are configurable via a link with a computer.* Intel estimates that users will get 48 hours of battery life on average.
Intel’s MICA will officially appear in Barneys’ display counters next week for $495.
