Although at a first glance Sony’s press invitations for a New York City gathering on October 9 are vaguer than vague, the tagline “Demand great” all but confirms we’re looking at Xperia Z3-related announcements.
It’s ironic, people have been dying to see Sony’s robustly built, delightful and uber-beefy smartphones on American store shelves for years, and when US carriers finally take an interest in Xperias, they get to pick up possibly the company’s least exciting flagship ever.
Well, ever is a strong word, but clearly, the Xperia Z3 disappointed more than enthralled when it first saw daylight, back at IFA. Unlike the Z2, Z1 and first-gen Z, all of which made much bigger waves in the recent past. And neither of which got the US network support it deserved.
Meanwhile, rumor is the Z3 will launch with T-Mobile and Verizon subsidies, at the very least, and Sprint may get a piece of the action too. AT&T availability is more of a long shot, but knowing Sony’s US tradition (or lack thereof), three out of the “big four” looks like a feat for the ages.
Now, Sony doesn’t quite spell out Z3’s debut date stateside, but it does encourage members of the press to “demand great” on October 9 in New York City. That slogan has been heavily used to promote the Z2 spin-off these past few weeks, including in advertising actions mocking the competition.
At the same time, Sony spurred mobile consumers to “demand great” in the mini-smartphone and mini-tablet departments, so it’s entirely possible the Z3 Compact handheld and Z3 Tablet Compact will be headed to one or several American service providers as well.
And if the full-sized Z3 phone’s specs are a little on the underwhelming side compared to rivals, the Z3 Compact and Tablet Compact have little to no competition in their respective market niches. October 9, don’t forget.
