Future Samsung wearable to challenge Apple Watch with 'simple payment functions'

Apple may have been the first device manufacturer to unveil a wearable piece with an integrated mobile online payment solution, but Samsung is reportedly looking to steal Apple Watch’s thunder with a similar yet more advanced gadget.

Likely pissed at Cupertino for getting a jump on their Galaxy Note 4 release with another impressive iPhone turnaround, the Gear Live and Gear S makers are carefully cooking up their revenge, targeting the much laggier iWatch. Darn it, Apple Watch.

In many ways superior to all existing Samsung timepieces, in spite of its heavy reliance on compatible iPhones, the Apple Watch will only roll out to end users “early next year”. For quite a pretty penny, especially in a limited gold-coated edition.

Needless to say therefore the competition still has time to fix some of Gear Live’s shortcomings. Plenty of time. I mean, four or five months in Samsung universe is like four or five human years. And so the race is on.

The race to develop, test and fully polish a fingerprint scanner-sporting wearable with PayPal-powered “simple payment functions”. Oh, yes, you didn’t really think Sammy was alone in this venture. Not when PayPal so openly criticized, nay, mocked Apple Pay.

Of course, it’s way too early for the specifics to be exposed. So we’re not quite sure how Samsung’s smartwatch-dedicated payment system will work. We do know however they’re also joining forces with Synaptics, “a global company specialized in biometric verification”, so it’s entirely possible the gizmo will feature other security-enhancing sensors too.

Like some sort of retina scanner. Sounds like something out of a Stanley Kubrick movie, but it’s actually not the first time we’re hearing whispers of this kind. Other gossip calls for a formal introduction at the Mobile World Congress in February 2015, at the earliest, and a push to around 50 countries worldwide for Samsung and PayPal’s financial service. Guess Apple can’t afford very many last-minute Watch tweaks after all, huh?
