Qualcomm's first high-end 64-bit chips are coming to a device near you in H1 2015

Don’t worry if all’s quiet on the high-end mobile processing front for Qualcomm of late, as Snapdragon 808 and 810-powered gadgets could see daylight as early as January 2015.

Given that Apple introduced 64-bit mobile chips in 2013, many expected 2014 to be the year of 64-bit processing in the Android space too. Only Cupertino’s move came as a shock for both Google, the architects of the popular operating system, and Qualcomm, the main supplier of SoCs for device manufacturers.

The leading global semiconductor producer ultimately came up with a 64-bit-ready CPU for 2014, the Snapdragon 410, but the most advanced Android version in circulation is still confined to running 32-bit apps.

Besides, the 410 is nowhere near a powerhouse, delivering speeds closer to the middling 400 than the upper-tier 800 or 805, so clearly, this hasn’t been Qualcomm’s proudest year.

But 2015 may well be, with two 64-bit superstars slated for commercial releases by the end of June. Granted, that sounds distant and bleak, however it’s merely a precaution on Qualcomm’s part, as we’re likely to see Snapdragon 808 beasts showcased at CES next January.

Perhaps even one or two flagships built on S810, though at first, the 20 nm octa-core processor was scheduled for a wide-scale launch in H2 2015. Now it’s been moved up to H1, but a triumphant appearance at CES or MWC still seems like a long shot.

Don’t be sad, the 808 is zippy as hell, as it’s likewise built on a 20 nm platform, with a matching Adreno 418 GPU, six cores ordered in a big.LITTLE Cortex-A57/A53 arrangement, LPDDR3 memory technology, LTE Cat 6/7 support and 4K video playing abilities.

Meanwhile, the 810 adds two extra cores in the equation, takes things a step further in the graphics department with an Adreno 430 GPU, enables 3D gaming on 4K displays and supports LPDDR4 dual-channel memory. Forget Samsung’s Galaxy Note 4, LG’s G3 or HTC’s One M8, the S6 and Note 5, LG G4 and HTC One 9 will be truly epic.
