The Galaxy Mega 2 has been quietly listed by Samsung on its Thai website without an official press release or announcement.
While the Galaxy Note series has been a massive hit for Samsung, the company has never revealed how well its smaller, non-flagship Galaxy Mega phablet lineup has done. However, Samsung isn’t a company that refrains from launching second-generation versions of even flop devices, and it’s probably the reason why the Galaxy Mega 2 is now official and available for purchase, at least in Thailand.
The Galaxy Mega 2 has been lurking in the rumor mills for quite some time, and Samsung has now put the phablet’s listing on its Thai website. The Galaxy Mega 2 is packing a 6-inch display – that’s right between the 5.8-inch and 6.3-inch displays of the two original Galaxy Mega phones, hinting that Samsung might be sticking with just a single device for the Galaxy Mega 2. The screen resolution is still 1280×720 pixels, so those looking for an ultra-sharp display will be disappointed.
The rest of the hardware has also only been mildly upgraded, putting the Galaxy Mega 2 firmly in the mid-range. It features a quad-core 1.5GHz processor (said to be the Exynos 4415), 1.5GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel rear camera with LED flash and 1080p video recording, a 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera, 16GB of storage expandable via a microSD slot, and LTE connectivity. The phablet is running Android 4.4 KitKat, and Samsung seems to have brought over many of its flagship features, including Ultra Power Saving Mode and one-handed operation.
It’s unclear if the Galaxy Mega 2 will be launched outside Asia, though it probably will given how the original Galaxy Megas were widely available around the world. Samsung hasn’t mentioned a price either, but those details shouldn’t be too far behind now that the device has gone online on the company’s website.
