Nvidia lowers price, rolls out more features for the Shield

Handheld console priced at $199 until the end of April, gets new features and Android upgrade to 4.42 KitKat.

Nvidia has been doing its damndest to get people to pay attention to the Shield. At one time Nvidia thought it had a force to be reckoned with in the (dwindling) market of discrete portable gaming devices, but aside from giving the thing away to bloggers at press junket events Nvidia has had a hard time moving inventory and getting any sort of real acclaim for the device.

But that doesn’t stop Nvidia from beating the dead horse. At its GPU Technology Conference in San Jose, the company announced a handful of updates and new features for the Shield.

First, the Shield will be getting a temporary price cut to $199. This will be in effect until the end of April.

It will be also getting an upgrade to Android KitKat.

The most talked about updates to the handheld console are, however, its ability to stream games remotely over the internet via WiFi or LTE. Nvidia says the streaming quality will be comparable to streaming the games via its Grid cloud gaming service.

For gamers that prefer a more traditional keyboard and mouse experience to the Shield’s console-like controller, the Shield now supports the ability to use Bluetooth mice and keyboards to game.

The updates will be rolled out on the second of April.
