Amazon’s smartphone may feature six cameras

Amazon’s smartphone will make its debut sometime in the second quarter, and will come with six cameras in total four of which will be used for touch-free navigation.

Amazon has been rumored to be making a smartphone since last year, with early rumors suggesting that HTC will be the manufacturer. While details of the device are slim at the moment, Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities mentioned in a letter to clients last week that Amazon will launch its own smartphone brand in three to six months.

“We predict Amazon (US) will launch its own brand smartphone in 3-6 months, using the same hardware strategy as used for its e-reader and tablet,”Kuo said.*Amazon sells the Kindle hardware units as a loss leader, but manages to make money off digital content and services. *It looks like the e-commerce giant will follow a similar strategy with its mobile line. Kuo also said that initial manufacturing will be limited to 300,000 to 600,000 units, with a streamlined production line slated to commence from Q2 2014.

One interesting feature that was revealed by Kuo is that Amazon’s mobile will feature six cameras. There will be a camera at the back and one at the front, along with four additional cameras that assist in touch-free navigation. It is unclear as to how this technology will be realized, but Kuo mentioned that Amazon’s focus will be to differentiate itself from other manufacturers by offering something unique to users.

Other hardware details of the device include a Snapdragon 801 SoC, 4.7-inch display, a 13 MP camera sensor by Sony and a battery that is said to be between 2,000 to 2,400 mAh.
