It looks like ZTE had a last-minute change of heart vis-à-vis Grand S II’s hardware specifications, upgrading the 5.5 incher from just another Snapdragon 800-powered high-end phone to 4 GB RAM-packing groundbreaker.
Hey Samsung, ZTE has a message for you: you snooze, you lose. The Korea-based mobile world leader was the first to cram 3 GB RAM into a handheld – the Galaxy Note 3 – and looked like a prime candidate for the next awe-inspiring feat, as it brought to light the industry’s pioneering 8 GB DDR4 mobile DRAM chip near the end of 2013.
Yet their newest top-shelf Galaxy S family member, the S5, settled for an underwhelming 2 gigs of random-access memory, which put Sony’s 3 GB RAM-touting Xperia Z2 in an excellent position to amaze and quench the thirst for bleeding edge performance of power junkies.
Until Tenaa, aka China’s FCC equivalent, dropped the bomb, revealing one particular version of the ZTE Grand S II may carry an avant-garde 4 GB RAM. Meanwhile, no one knows when to expect Samsung’s Galaxy S5 Prime out and about, or even if the ultra-high-end phone is real to start with.
But since this is ZTE’s day, let’s give credit where credit is due and hype the powerhouse that might well deserve the greatest hype. The thing is we’re not yet sure the tidbit divulged by Tenaa is legit. It could be a typo, mind you.
Besides, if it’s genuine, who’s to say the 4 GB variant isn’t experimental and only meant for a handful of Asian markets? After all, ZTE did unveil a model with 2 gigs in Las Vegas at CES, and there must have been a reason for that.
Lastly, the whopping memory isn’t so very impressive when paired with an aging 2.3 GHz Snapdragon 800 processor and especially Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. Also, a middling (by phablet standards) 3,000 mAh battery. So if you really want to make waves, ZTE, I suggest you start from scratch. Keep the neat voice recognition functions and improve everything else.
