Apple has confirmed that it’s going to launch a new feature which will recommend apps to users based on the kind of apps they search for.
iTunes’ app store will soon be able to recommend to you an app to download based on your previous search history.
This won’t be Apple’s first foray into recommendation waters. The company has previously tried its hand at this by suggesting users apps that others bought, and who can forget its genius recommendations in the native Music application.
Earlier this week some users started noticing a change when they searched for an app in the App Store. There was a “Related” bar underneath the search bar and it listed search suggestions relevant to the app that the user had searched for. So if the user search for news reader, the App Store would display relevant results like it normally does and it would also offer recommendations about the kinds of apps similar to the one that the user had just searched for.
Basically what the feature does is list categories that it recommends to users based on their search, the breadcrumb-like listing makes it easier to jump straight ahead to any particular category and seek out any apps that are of interest. This should help people discover apps that otherwise go unnoticed. Most users don’t bother looking beyond most popular listings or popular search results. Giving users the ability to seek relevant apps through recommended categories solves this problem to an extent.
A spokesperson for Apple confirmed to CNET that this is indeed a new feature. Apple plans to roll it out for all users by the end of this week.
