Uber charges girl $362 for a 22 minute ride

A user of the popular rideshare platform Uber was recently hit with a $362 charge on a supposed 22 minutes ride.

The rider, Gabriel Wathen, decided to hop into an Uber cab for her trip home from a party in the early morning, and woke up the next day only to find that Uber had charged her a hefty $362 for the ride.

In case you didn’t know, Uber uses a dynamic pricing structure, which means the rate varies during peak hours and holidays. Uber claims that it needs to implement a ‘surge pricing’ to meet the demand of these peak hours, and users will have to be wary*that the*normally affordable fares will be multiplied.

So if you’re out partying like the rest of the crowd on Halloween in big cities like San Francisco and New York, expect the surge multiplier to be higher than usual.

Wathen’s Uber fee ended up being so enormous that she didn’t have enough to pay her rent. She took to crowdfunding, and as luck would have it people began donating to ease her burden.

There’s a moral to this story, and it’s a pretty clear one. If you’re using Uber, don’t blindly request a ride unless you know what the rates are and how the company structures its pricing system.
