KitKat adoption hits 30 percent ahead of Android Lollipop's release

Jelly Bean continues to be the most widely used version of Google’s mobile operating system.*

Google has published the latest Android platform distribution numbers, just as the search giant is preparing to roll out*the Android 5.0 Lollipop update to Nexus devices. Nearly a year after its release, Android 4.4 KitKat is now running on*30.2 percent of all devices powered by the green robot. That’s a 5.7 percent increase from over a month ago – not exactly a huge jump, but it’s a good sign that a substantial amount of users are enjoying the latest and greatest that Android has to offer.

As expected, Jelly Bean is still powering a majority of all Android devices, with versions 4.1 to 4.3 now totaling 50.9 percent. Ice Cream Sandwich is down to 8.5 percent, and Gingerbread, which was the most widespread version of Android until a few months ago, had crossed into the single digits to take up 9.8 percent of market share. Froyo is still clinging on to 0.8 percent, and we’ll probably not see it disappear until users with extremely old devices decide to upgrade to something newer.

Android Lollipop will likely start showing up in the distribution numbers next month, but it’s unlikely it will be able to capture a double digit market share until next year.
