Many A-list actors are feverishly waiting for that call, but the one Sony Pictures really wants just turned the studios down.
Another setback for the long-in-development second Steve Jobs biographical film? Maybe that’s best, as it gives people enough time to forget all about the first. You know, the one starring Ashton Kutcher of all people in the titular role and directed by Joshua Michael Stern (who?) on the way to stellar $16 million domestic grosses.
Oops, did I just bring back painful memories of 128 wasted minutes? Clearly, the polarizing, controversial but legendary tech pioneer deserves better, and that’s where Sony Pictures comes in.
The movie distribution and production company snapped up the rights to Walter Isaacson’s authorized book revolving around the life and career of Apple’s co-founder years ago. They then went through a lot of trouble to find the perfect director/writer duo, and especially the ideal Jobs “impersonator”, unfortunately encountering plenty of obstacles.
For one thing, the first director choice, David Fincher, backed out of the project due to creative and financial “differences”. The “Fight Club” and “Social Network” helmer took Christian Bale with him, but screenwriter Aaron Sorkin (“Social Network”, “Moneyball”) stuck around.
Meanwhile, Oscar winner Danny Boyle (“Slumdog Millionaire”) didn’t hesitate to grab the baton from Fincher, and Leonardo DiCaprio immediately became the protagonist frontrunner. But alas, the five-time Academy Award nominee is looking for a break from acting, so after a short period of artificial stability, the Jobs position is again open.
Ironically, Christian Bale is back leading the list of contenders, with pretty much every other big Hollywood name that semi-fits the age range joining him. We’re talking Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and Bradley Cooper primarily, although if neither one says yes, we’re guessing Matthew McConaughey, Johnny Depp, Robert Downey Jr. and Brad Pitt could always enter the race.
What’s that, no one besides Bale resembles the departed father of the iMac, iPhone and iPad in the slightest? Well, some say Ashton Kutcher fit the physical profile of the role perfectly, and we all know how that turned out.
