Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University want to send kids to the moon using the Oculus Rift.
Daniel Shafrir and his colleagues at CMU are working on a lunar rover that kids can control using the Oculus Rift. The team, aptly named Astrobotic Technology, aims to get their hands on a $30 million prize from Google, which they’ll use to launch their rover into space and then land it the crater-filled surface of the moon.
If you’ve been following Oculus and the development of the Rift virtual reality headset, you’ll know how amazing this experiment would be if it comes to fruition. Since we all can’t blast off on a rocket ship and jump around on the moon, the next best thing is to experience it in virtual reality.
There are a lot of development going on in space exploration and virtual reality, and there’s no harm in combining the two so the rest of us can get in on the action, too.
