Every once in awhile, there comes a mobile app revolutionizes everything, but some times one comes along and we’re just not quite sure what to say about it. PhotoMath from MicroBlink is just that. It’s a math problem-solving app that might just change the way we go about studying and, dare I say it, cheating.
PhotoMath scans a printed math problem from sources such as a textbook, and solves it for you while showing you all the necessary steps to get to the answer. The maker of the app claims this is just so you don’t have to flip through the solution manual, and not at all intended to deprive students of their learning experience.
While we’re not experts at user experience development, we certainly have a few ideas on how to turn PhotoMath into something more of a learning tool rather than a fast-track tool. Perhaps, the maker of the app can implement a control mechanism to prevent students from simply snapping a picture and getting the solution. Instead, they need to input an answer (not just any answer, i.e. 1 or 2) before the app magically displays the correct answer.
PhotoMath is available for iOS and Windows Phone, with the Android version to arrive in early 2015.
