OnePlus One can probably ace any bend test, and it's rain-resistant too (video)

Take that, Apple!

The latest smartphone producer looking to capitalize on Apple’s recent #bendgate sorrow is OnePlus. God knows they could use some free positive publicity after a whole string of scandals, sexism accusations, failed advertising stunts and rampant reports of screen quality issues.

Not to mention the sheer stupidity of the invite-only OnePlus One ordering process, which will finally be nixed at the end of the month. In the meantime, maybe you’re wondering how the controversial but overall solid 5.5-inch Android handheld can withstand a series of standard “quality tests”. Bend test included.

But not just any bend test, one performed in a controlled environment, with the help of a machine that puts 25 kg of pressure on the gizmo 1,000 times in a row. It doesn’t sound quite as extreme as Samsung’s “Gluteus Maximus” evaluation, where the Galaxy Note 4 had to endure 100 kg several hundred times, but it’s close enough.

And it should help let iFans know once and for all the bending problems of the new iPhones aren’t normal. Nor are they necessary “features”, as Samsung defiantly alleges in a separate brouhaha, tentatively dubbed #gapgate.

Back to the OnePlus One’s claimed robustness, let’s highlight the 8.9 mm thin device seems to stubbornly stand its ground not only when sat on, but also under 10 minutes of simulated rain. And mind you, we aren’t dealing with a water-protected phone per se.

The One is likewise not shielded against extreme temperatures, yet it survives 4 hours of exposure to 55 degrees Celsius. And in theory, it doesn’t break if dropped from a low height for 40,000 times on its face. Nor does it crack from 1.2 meters high the first few times.

It goes without saying you shouldn’t try any of this home, just maybe be a little relaxed when handling the OnePlus One. On paper, a Bendgate part two starring the Android phablet is out of the question. And so is a Raingate or Dropgate. Huh, so unlike the marketing department, the OnePlus engineers aren’t a bunch of amateurs. Refreshing!
