It’s been way too long, Apple teases, likely referring to the most recent iPad and iMac lineup upgrades, which are getting quite old.
The agenda is packed over in Cupertino, but don’t act too surprised. We always expected this fall to be a rollercoaster ride for Tim Cook & co., which are yet to tie up iPhone 6 and 6 Plus availability loose ends. Meanwhile, the “Bendgate” scandal may have played down in recent weeks, but it’s nowhere near a happy end.
Then again, if Apple gets caught up in every minor iPhone 6 predicament, the Apple Watch stays on the back burner for all eternity, and the beautiful, featherweight iPad Air never gets an heir (pun intended).
And so, like it or not, it’s time for Cupertino to take up another challenge… or ten. Or rather the time is nearing. October 16 is the official D-Day, and much as it did with building up last month’s keynote, Apple is keeping things awfully cryptic.
“It’s been way too long”, press invites say, accompanied by a logo that subtly hints to new Mac announcements. Both iMacs and MacBooks? Maybe Mac minis too? Hard to say at this point, but even if a dreamy Retina 12-inch MacBook Air debuts, it’s unlikely to roll out in stores before the holidays. In sufficient quantities, that is.
Which is not what we can say about the iPad Air 2, destined to break cover on the 16th and become commercially available in the ensuing days. Perhaps on launch day even. The next-gen 9.7 incher is hardly the best kept secret in the world, with various specifics and specifications revealed of late.
A slightly thinner profile is a near guarantee, as is an on-board A8 processor, Touch ID integration, anti-reflective screen coating, upgraded rear camera and gold color option. You can also file 2 GB RAM and split-screen multitasking under possible but not certain improvements, whereas Apple Pay support is definitely coming, but likely with no NFC.
Finally, a fresh iPad mini entry with a Retina display is always a possibility, yet credible sources claim the 7.9 incher could be delayed until early 2015. If that pans out, the iPad mini 3 might ultimately bow alongside the elusive gigantic 12.9-inch iPad Pro. I tell you, I don’t know when Apple’s execs, designers and engineers get time to sleep during this busy, busy, busy period of the year.
