Remember the Android One program Google announced at its I/O developer conference this year? If you do, there’s some great news for you. The very first Android One devices will be making their debut soon and will be available for purchase the very same day they will be announced. How soon? On the 15th of this month.
Google announced the Android One program with the aim to provide an enjoyable Android experience to the masses in the emerging economies at affordable rates. Android One Devices would receive regular updates from Google, similar to Google Play Edition models. The hardware specifications have also been set by Google to ensure a consistent experience across the entire line up of Android One devices. The best part about these devices will definitely be the pricing, with Google aiming for a sub $100 price point.
The first devices based on the Android One platform will be announced on the 15th at a Google event in India. All three Android one hardware partners – Micromax, Karbonn and Spice will be launching their first products there and have already partnered with top Indian online retailers to start shipping the devices on the very same day, Micromax has partnered with Amazon India, Karbonn has tied up with Snapdeal, and Spice will be offering its device through Flipkart. All three manufacturers have also uploaded the teaser pages for the devices. Interestingly, all three teaser pages point to the devices going on sale exactly at 3:30PM IST.
The exact specifications of these devices will only be known on the 15th but we did get an idea of what to expect, at the Google I/O event. The first Android One device from Micromax was shown at the conference with a 4.5-inch display, MediaTek chipset, dual-SIM cards, microSD card slot, and FM Radio.
Google’s senior vice president and head of Android – Sundar Pichai is expected to be present at the event to officially announce Android One.
