Dying BlackBerry brand clings to T-Mobile with the Passport

BlackBerry and T-Mobile’s relationship suffered a split earlier this year, when T-Mobile announced that it was going to stop selling Blackberry handsets. The reason behind the split was said to be lack of demand for BlackBerry handsets from the consumers. But a new leaked picture posted by OurBerries website shows that the two companies might have worked a deal together for the upcoming BlackBerry Passport smartphone. The image shows a BlackBerry Passport handset with the T-Mobile logo at the back. We should find out more later this month after the device is announced officially by BlackBerry.

The handset has been leaked multiple times since a long time now and we know almost everything about it. But for some strange reason, BlackBerry will not be announcing the device until the 24th September. The BlackBerry 10.3 OS update as well as the BlackBerry Classic smartphone the event will be taking place simultaneously in Toronto, London and Dubai.

The BlackBerry Passport will be running the new BB10.3 OS and comes with a combined physical keyboard and a touch-sensitive trackpad. Apart from its weird aspect ratio and squarish design, the smartphone does pack some impressive specifications. It comes with a 4.5-inch 1440 x 1440 display with 480PPI, Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 or 801 chipset, 3GB RAM, 13MP rear camera with Optical Image Stabilization (OIS), F2.0 aperture lens, 1080p video recording with 4K video recording feature coming in future, 3450mAh battery, 2MP front-facing camera, and LTE connectivity.

With these specs, the Passport will be a very interesting product and could help BlackBerry steady its sinking ship. It will surely not help BlackBerry turn around but could be the first step to stop the market share nosedive it has seen in the past few quarters. US availability will be key as US remains one of the most important smartphone markets in the world and recent share of BlackBerry in the US market has dipped to below 0%.
