Microsoft officially announces the low-end Nokia Lumia 530

The successor to the most popular Windows Phone device comes with much of the same hardware and a similar budget price.

Microsoft has officially announced the Lumia 530 (and the Lumia 530 Dual SIM), the latest Lumia handset aimed at bringing in more users to the Windows Phone ecosystem with the lure of a great*experience at an extremely low price point.

The Lumia 530 has a 4-inch display with a 854×480 resolution, which is similar to the display on the Lumia 520 but with a slightly higher resolution. The phone is powered by a quad-core Snapdragon 200 chip clocked at 1.2 GHz, another minor upgrade over the Snapdragon S4 on the Lumia 520. The Lumia 530 retains the 512 MB of RAM, but downgrades internal storage to 4 GB, though it can be expanded by up to 128 GB with a microSD slot.

Other hardware of the Lumia 530 includes a 5-megapixel camera (sadly a fixed-focus unit, compared to the autofocus camera on the Lumia 520), dual SIM slots, and a 1,430 mAh battery that is good for 22 days of standby and 10 hours of talk time over a 3G network. Apart from the downgrades in some specs, Microsoft is also cutting costs with the use of software navigation buttons and by removing the dedicated camera button that was once a requirement on all Windows Phone devices.

The Lumia 530 runs on Windows Phone 8.1 with Nokia’s Cyan firmware,*and will offer*free 15 GB of OneDrive storage. It will be released in select markets in orange, bright green, white, and dark grey colors in August with a price tag of*€85 (around $115, before taxes), which will put it in direct competition with devices like the Motorola Moto E, though Microsoft will no doubt be hoping that the popularity of the Lumia 520 will help make consumers opt for the Lumia 530.
