New screenshots of an upcoming Windows build shows off the Start menu as well as how metro-style apps will run in desktop mode. The new build is likely to focus more on traditional mouse/keyboard input.
Microsoft gave us a sneak peek at the new start menu earlier this year, but newly leaked screenshots give us a closer look at what the future of Windows might look like. The screenshots, which appeared on myce, show the start menu as it appears in a new Windows build from July 13 codenamed Threshold. In all likelyhood, when the next major update to Windows ships next year, it’ll likely be renamed to Windows 9.
The new start menu looks similar to the one we were shown in April, but we can see a number of Metro-like apps pinned to the right side of the menu along with traditional applications. The start menu can be expanded to fill the entire screen and will then function much like the start screen found in Windows 8. The second screenshot shows how Microsoft hopes to make the metro-style apps function in desktop mode.
The screenshots showcase Microsoft’s plans to make the operating system more streamlined for mouse and keyboard users. The next version of Windows will put a lot of focus on desktop mode.
Microsoft is planning to release the new “Threshold” version of Windows in 2015, along with an update to the Xbox One operating system and a combined version of Windows Phone and Windows RT. In contrast to the desktop version of Windows, the combined RT and Phone version of Windows will completely drop desktop mode and focus on metro-apps as opposed to traditional applications.
