'Star Wars: Episode VII' filming possibly delayed due to Harrison Ford's leg injury

Harrison Ford’s broken leg might take almost six months to heal, putting the film’s December 2015 release date into jeopardy.

According to Jedi News, several sources report that the production of Star Wars*Episode VII,*currently slated for release on December 18, 2015,*could be delayed because of the “severe nature” of Ford’s injury, with meetings now being held to discuss how things will affect the shooting schedule.

Earlier this month, Harrison Ford, who reprises the iconic role of Han Solo, was rushed to the hospital following an ankle injury*on the set of Star Wars Episode VII.*Initially reported to be a not-so-serious situation, new rumors suggest that Ford’s injury might not be as minor as first thought, with the actor reportedly back in the US*for surgery that could put him on the sidelines for six months, maybe more.

With Han Solo said*to be an important part of the plot, this*could be a considerable*setback for production and could result in script rewrites, possibly reducing the role Ford has to play (a move that won’t sit well with fans of the franchise.) According to TheForce.net , a Lucasfilm spokesperson told them that “there is no change in the release date,” but it’s likely that major changes to the production schedule*will be unavoidable.

While the upcoming film might be delayed, it hasn’t stopped rumors of what the future holds after Episode VII. Reportedly,*J.J. Abrams will*be handing*over the reins for Episode VIII and Episode IX over to*Rian Johnson, writer and director of well-received 2012 film Looper. After the lackluster Star Trek Into Darkness, not everyone has been keen on the idea of Abrams directing Episode VII, and bringing in someone new to take over the helm will help keep things fresh.

Star Wars: Episode VII is currently filming in Abu Dhabi. The film features returning stars Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Kenny Baker. They are joined by a new cast that includes John Boyega, Adam Driver, Lupita Nyong’o, Gwendoline Christie, Andy Serkis, Daisy Ridley, Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson and Max von Sydow.
