Bill signed by Governor repeals law prohibiting commerce in anything but US dollars.
Bitcoin supporters scored another victory this weekend, as California’s Governor made it officially legal to conduct commerce in the state with the cryptocurrency.
This weekend Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill that repealed a section of California’s Corporations Code, which prohibited companies or individuals from issuing money other than US dollars. This would mean that retailers would be able to accept bitcoin — in addition to other cryptocurrencies such as Litecoin and Dogecoin — in exchange for goods and services.
“In an era of evolving payment methods, from Amazon Coins to Starbucks Stars, it is impractical to ignore the growing use of cash alternatives,” Democratic Assemblyman Roger Dickinson, the bill’s author, said a statement earlier this month. “This bill is intended to fine-tune current law to address Californians’ payment habits in the mobile and digital fields.”
Recently, US satellite TV provider DirecTV announced that it would be offering customers the option to pay for its services with bitcoin.
