BlackBerry is teasing possibly the final two handhelds it’ll ever make in style, revealing not only their names and ETAs, but also their “classic” and eccentric respectively designs.
I know you’ve probably heard this before, but it looks like BlackBerry will be getting just one more shot to turn things around from a financial standpoint. If the Classic and Passport fail, the way their predecessors did, either BB shall leave the phone manufacturing business, or declare bankruptcy altogether.
The former is clearly more plausible, unless the Classic/Passport duo actually proves a hit. What chances do the two stand? Hard to say. The Classic is a blast from the past aesthetically, looking pretty much like a (barely) evolved Bold device, so at best, it could appeal to a handful of QWERTY nostalgia-ridden users.
Meanwhile, the Passport is original, I have to hand it to BlackBerry, but also a wee bit too strange to think it’ll ever catch on in the mainstream mobile décor. It’s basically a wide (as in really, really wide) passport-like gizmo, with a square touchscreen and quirky little physical keyboard beneath it lacking number and punctuation buttons.
Guess BB’s designers finally realized they had nothing to lose, so for once, they tried something different. Clearly, the Passport will stand out from the crowd, but let’s wait and see if that’s a good thing.
What’s undoubtedly good is the bad boy’s rumored list of features, including a 4.5-inch display with 1,400 x 1,400 pixels resolution and around 440 ppi (whoa), 3 GB RAM, 13 MP rear camera and beefy 3,450 mAh battery.

Not much is known about BlackBerry Classic’s specs, although a lower-end market position seems like a no-brainer, and according to BB’s CEO himself, John Chen, September will see the high-end/mid-range pair go official, at a press conference in London. Too much information too soon? Well, when you’re in the trouble these guys are in, secrecy becomes a luxury no one can afford.
