HTC One (E8) announced with flagship specs, polycarbonate body

The*HTC One (E8) brings hardware similar to the HTC One M8 but packs it all in a less premium plastic body.

The HTC One M8 Ace has*made numerous appearances in the rumor mill, and it has now been officially announced by HTC as the HTC One (E8).

The E8, as the E in its name would suggest, is a more economical variant of the HTC One M8. However, instead of cutting down on the hardware, HTC is keeping costs down by wrapping the E8 in a polycarbonate body. That will make considerably less premium than the M8, but given HTC has used plastic to great effect in the past, it shouldn’t exactly be as cheap-feeling as*one would expect from, say, Samsung’s phones.

The E8 loses out on the UltraPixel camera of its flagship sibling, but maybe that’s a good thing – the E8 sports a 13-megapixel camera with f/2.2 aperture, which means it should be able to capture more detail than the low-resolution UltraPixel sensor on the M8. There is no secondary camera in play here though, but the E8 does sport a 5-megapixel front-facing camera for taking those perfect selfies.

The phone*will also feature dual SIM slots, but other than that, there is no difference in specs – the E8*will come with a 5-inch 1080p display, quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor clocked at 2.5GHz, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage and a microSD slot, 5-megapixel front-facing camera, BoomSound speakers and Android 4.4.2 KitKat with HTC’s Sense 6 UI and features like Motion Launch gestures.

The One (E8) will launch in China for*CN¥2,799 (about*$450) on an unannounced date in red, grey and silver colors, and will later make its way to other markets. At*almost half the price of the M8 but with similar top-tier specs, the E8*should be a pretty good deal for those looking for a dual SIM-enabled flagship handset, though it remains to be seen just how widely it will be available upon launch.
