Big, slim and mid-range: Sony Xperia T3 smartphone is official

Sony’s already plentiful mid-range smartphone lineup is about to get even more crowded, as the Xperia T3 is here to offer a cheaper alternative for prospective Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo buyers.

Not one to be eclipsed by Samsung, Sony also continues to flood the mobile market, unveiling Xperia model after model while showing sufficient software love to aging family members. Unlike their Korean-based rivals*though, the Japanese seem to have a solid strategy for spin-offs and rehashes, trying to cover the landscape’s every tenth of an inch.

As such, while the newly introduced Xperia T3 shares most of its internals with the T2 Ultra, the footprint is distinct enough to scatter any trace of confusion. Trumpeted as the “world’s slimmest 5.3-inch smartphone”, the T3 amazingly weighs just 148 grams and measures 7 mm thin.

For comparison, the smaller 5.1-inch Samsung Galaxy S5 tips the scales at 145 grams and is 1 full mm thicker than Sony’s new guy. Also, HTC’s One M8 weighs 160 grams and measures 9.4 mm in thickness.

Pretty crazy slender, huh? Too bad the Xperia T3 can’t keep up with its higher-end adversaries in raw performance or multitasking, packing a quad-core 1.4 GHz Qualcomm-made chip (probably a Snapdragon 400) and 1 GB RAM.

The built-in storage is fairly skimpy as well (8 gigs), though that shouldn’t be such a serious problem with the external microSD card slot supporting an extra 32 GB. Imaging-wise, the T3 is no powerhouse either, but the 8 MP rear-facing camera has a fair share of neat tricks up its sleeve: 8x digital zoom, image stabilizer, HDR, 1,080p video recording, object tracking, scene recognition, etc., etc.

Of course, the 5.3-inch display boasts 1,280 x 720 pixels resolution, hilariously advertised as Full HD on Sony’s official website, whereas the 2,500 mAh battery sounds a little stingy, but it’s actually not, mostly thanks to the much-hyped Stamina mode.

Pre-loaded with Android 4.4 KitKat and capable of 4G LTE speed access, the Sony Xperia T3 rolls out globally “from the end of July 2014” for an unspecified price.
