Plagued by worldwide component deficits, Sony’s Xperia Z2 is said to be headed stateside only unlocked, although a picture posted on Google+ seems to suggest Verizon has something up its sleeve.
Xperia Z2’s unfortunate delay-riddled saga is nowhere near a happy ending, despite European deliveries from multiple online Sony Mobile stores kicking off at last. The trickiest part remains stocking carrier partners with enough inventory to start their subsidies, particularly in the US of A.
A household name in the mobile industry everywhere but America, Sony has historically had great difficulties in bringing its portable hardware to wireless service providers that part of the world.
The Xperia Z, for instance, only saw daylight on T-Mobile six months after it launched in Europe and Asia, and the Z1, rebranded as the Z1s, enjoyed essentially the same gloomy fate. Actually, forget their gloom, because they may have had it good after all.
Z1’s sequel looked doomed to an even darker destiny, as Sony announced a “summer” beginning for US SIM-free shipping. Nothing about any carrier subsidies, which suggested there were none in the pipeline.
But then how do you explain Sony had a mock-up of a Verizon-branded Xperia Z2 lying around, which the Japanese uploaded to their official Google Plus account? Sure, they deleted the image almost instantaneously and went on to apologize “for any confusion this may have caused”, yet the question remains.

Why bother simulate the look of a Verizon-bound Z2 if you aren’t working on such a device? Then again, why hide it’s coming? Does Big Red even know you’re playing with their logos, Sony? So many questions and no one to answer them. Just a reminder the powerhouse 5.2 incher “will be coming to the U.S. unlocked this summer”. Thanks a lot, Sony, that’s soooo helpful.
