The world’s first “true” octa-core packing smartphone, UMI’s X2S, became official a couple of months ago, but now the Huawei Honor 3X has rolled out and intends to make quite a few waves, thanks primarily to unbeatable affordability.
Powered by the same impressive-sounding yet modest deep down MediaTek MT6592 8-core processor, the Honor 3X, which will be alternatively branded as the Glory 3S depending on the region where it launches, is to cost, wait for it, roughly $280 (Yuan 1,689).
That’s crazy cheap, as the Cortex A7-based CPU beneath the hood is no pushover. Again, it’s modest… for an 8-core, however several benchmarks have shown it performs on-par with top-shelf quad-core chips like Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800.
Besides, the Huawei Honor 3X has some other things going for it: a spacious 5.5-inch display, 2 GB RAM, 13 MP/5 MP dual cameras, microSD and dual SIM support. A massive 3,000 mAh battery too, which presumably can keep the lights on for close to 24 hours in continuous talk time.
Sure, the screen is far from groundbreaking, boasting 720p resolution and a run-of-the-mill pixel density, yet all in all Huawei seems to offer for $280 the kind of package others would charge north of $400 for.
And the cherry on top is they have a little something, something new in the Glory/Honor family for folks on even tighter budgets. Meet the Honor 3C/Glory 3C (lawsuit alert), a 5-incher with 720p resolution, 1.3 GHz quad-core MediaTek speed, 2,300 mAh battery, 8 MP rear-facing camera, microSD support and a $130 (Yuan 798) starting price.

That’s for the version equipped with 1 GB RAM, whereas the model sporting double the memory goes for $163 (Yuan 998). Or rather will go, as the Honor 3C, like the 3X, shall start selling in the following week or so in China. How about the Wild Wild West? Let’s say I wouldn’t count on any of the two making their way outside the Middle Kingdom in the near future.
