iOS 7 untethered jailbreak was reportedly sponsored by a Chinese company

Rumor has it that a Chinese company paid $1 million to the evad3rs developer team for the iOS 7 untethered jailbreak.

It took developers quite a lot of time to finally release an iOS 7 untethered jailbreak to the public, even after it had been rumored that the exploit had been stolen from evad3rs and sold off to a private buyer. This Sunday, out of the blue, they released the jailbreak intended for all supported devices running firmware up to iOS 7.0.4. However this release hasn’t been without controversy with rumors circulating that the team was paid $1 million by a Chinese company, as a result of which a storefront different than Cydia was installed for all those users who had the language on their devices set to Chinese.

Taig is the Chinese company rumored to have paid the evad3rs team, its storefront was automatically installed for users who had language set to Chinese, whereas users with other languages still received the Cydia store. It was discovered that Taig was hosting a plethora of pirated applications and content, and even the code of the iOS 7 untethered jailbreak itself was so obfuscated that it became hard for other developers to audit it.

While the evad3rs team has confirmed on their website that they have “benefitted financially” from their work and that they have a “right to be compensated in an ethical way” just as any other developer, the team says that it doesn’t condone piracy and that it will work with Taig to ensure that piracy issues are resolved. Its not unusual for Chinese app repositories to host pirated content, if the infamous cracked app source Installous shut down, its place was taken by a number of similar Chinese offerings that hosted cracked applications for iOS devices.
