Sony saddened plenty of Xperia users when announcing all high-end devices will need to get Android 4.3 Jelly Bean updates before leaping to 4.4 KitKat, but now the Z1 and Z Ultra officially run on the last JB flavor, so the 4.4 rollout has to be close.
Close enough, that is, as Sony continues to have a lot on its plate, what with the Xperia Z, ZL, ZR, Tablet Z, SP, T, TX and V also due for imminent bumps to Android 4.3.
Back to the Z1 and Z Ultra, let’s mention the fresh OTAs have begun making their way to users a few hours ago, so if you haven’t received them yet, there’s no reason to panic. Simply make sure you have a solid network connection active (preferably, through Wi-Fi), and maybe reboot the gizmos one or two times.
Remember, these things go out in waves, so they often take a week or so until becoming available for all. And yes, I know what you’re thinking. Jumping from Android 4.2 to 4.3 is no big deal. Right, only with Sony it is.
Aside from your traditional subtle all-around performance improvements, the latest Xperia-special software pack brings to the table the Smart Social Camera app to the Z Ultra, new versions of MyXperia, Smart Connect, Small apps, Sony Select, etc, etc, a unique custom interface experience called Xperia Themes and Xperia in Business security enhancements. Sounds pretty hefty to me.
As for KitKat update timelines, I’m afraid there’s nothing new to report. There’s a raft of Sony-made products nearly guaranteed to get it, with the Z1 and Z Ultra prime candidates for precedence, however guessing the ETAs is no easy endeavor.
