Dell launches new 8-inch iPad Air killer

Dell has a added mediocre Windows tablet and heavy-hitting Android slate to its team.

The first device is the Dell 7000 Series Venue 8, which features a brilliant 8.4-inch 2560 x 1600 OLED display.* Dell says the slate features an ‘edge-to-edge’ display that houses more than 4 million pixels.* For a tablet, that’s a lot of pixels, and for most people it can be excessive.* The monster display aside, the Venue 8 is also touted as the world’s thinnest tablet—ousting the iPad Air by just 0.1 millimeter.

Under the hood of the Venue 8 hums an Intel Atom Z3580 at 2.3GHz, 2GB of RAM, and 16GB of internal storage.* For modern day use, 16GB is virtually nothing, but users have the option of adding a MicroSD card to bump up the storage space to a more manageable 512GB.

A 5900mAh battery keeps the tablet juiced, and the 8MP rear camera will be responsible for snapping videos and pictures.* The standard 2MP front camera will handle all the selfies and usies.

Connectivity includes a USB port, MicroSD card reader, headphone and microphone combo jack, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and Miracast.* Android 4.4 KitKat comes preloaded to boot, but hopefully Dell will all do us a favor and work on adding Lollipop to the mix later on.

Windows hasn’t exactly fallen out of favor just yet as the second slate will feature Microsoft’s OS.* The Dell Venue 8 Pro has an 8-inch 1280 x 800 IPS display, which is significantly lesser than the 2560 x 1600 found in the latest 7000 Series Android model.

Internally, the Venue 8 Pro houses an Intel Bay Trail quad-core, 1GB of ram, and all usual connectivity.* Dell, however, offers an optional 32GB of internal storage upgrade, as well as two colors to choose from—patterned black and glossy white.

The Venue 8 Pro comes with Windows 8.1; a recent update that Microsoft is hoping will help to reinvigorate its Windows ecosystem.
