Foxconn employee allegedly stole iPhone 6 shells from assembly line

The employee has been detained by Chinese police.

It is no secret that countless iPhone 6 shells were leaked online before Apple even announced its new iPhones. Shells of both 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus were making the rounds on the internet a few months before the event was actually confirmed. There was always the indication that these leaks were coming out of China. Some of these leaks were the doing of a Foxconn employee who allegedly stole iPhone 6 shells off the assembly line and later sold them in the market.

Foxconn looks after most of the manufacturing for Apple’s devices. It is involved in the mass production of the new iPhones as well so it doesn’t come as a surprise to know that some shells were stolen from the company’s assembly line prior to the actual announcement.

Local media reports from China reveal that Qiao, a worker at one of Foxconn’s manufacturing facilities, stole the first shell back in June. As many as six iPhone 6 shells were stolen over a fortnight which were then sold in a Shenzhen market for over 6,000 yuan.

Foxconn did confirm that one of its workers has been detained by the Chinese police for this theft. The investigation is currently ongoing and if there’s ample proof to confirm that Qiao really did steal those iPhone 6 units, well then he’ll be in some hot water.
