LG G3 Beat/G3 s goes official as mid-tier 5-inch G3 variation

LG’s decision to go with a 4.7-inch display for G2’s “miniature” flavor has been deeply excoriated, so in order to avoid further trouble, G3’s diminutive variant, which dwarfs even the G2 mini, is dubbed G3 Beat in Asia and G3 s in Europe.

Perhaps afraid to tackle an overcrowded, over competitive market of 4.3 to 4.5-inch shrunken flagship devices, LG went its own personal route in designing G3’s “little” brother, ultimately coming up with a handheld that’s basically on-par with early 2013 high-enders.

Even better, it looks like a 2014 top dog from the outside, boasting a mid-tier record-breaking screen-to-body ratio of 74.1 percent, uber-slim bezels, a “sophisticated” Floating Arc metallic design and, overall, everything that makes the full-sized G3 such a looker. Yes, including rear physical buttons.

The G3 Beat measures a measly 137.7 mm in height, yet accommodates a hefty 5-inch IPS screen. Not a Full HD, I’m afraid, just an HD (1,280 x 720 pixels), but that’ll do for the attractive price LG is temporarily intent on keeping a secret.

My guess is… $400 or so. After all, size notwithstanding, the G3 Beat/G3 s is no Sony Xperia Z1 Compact rival, as it packs merely 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB of built-in storage and a decent quad-core 1.2 GHz Snapdragon 400 chip. Decent, but humdrum when compared to a, say, Snapdragon 800.

Software-wise, the 5 incher of course runs Android 4.4.2 KitKat out the box, along with all the LG-exclusive bells and whistles introduced by the G3: QuickMemo+, Smart Keyboard, Gesture Shot, etc., etc.

The G3 Beat also clones big bro’s laser auto focus camera technology, although this time around the rear snapper carries a humbler 8 megapixel sensor. The front shooter is likewise meeker, at 1.3 MP, while the battery is pretty sizable, at 2,540 mAh, perhaps explaining the not-very-slim 10.3 mm waist and 134 grams figure.

Due out on South Korean turf momentarily (i.e. on July 18) in metallic black, silk white and shine gold, the G3 Beat will take Europe and the CIS by storm as the G3 s “in the weeks that follow”. Anyone buying? Thinking about it, at least?
