Clock speeds and process node will improve on the A8, but the next-generation Apple’s flagship SoC won’t be quad or octa-core.
Apple’s hotly anticipated iPhone 6 will feature a long-list of improvements over its predecessor, most notably a new A-series SoC from Apple with built on the 20nm process node with a higher clockspeed.
According to Chinese media cnBeta, Apple’s A8 processor will have a 2.0 GHz or higher clockspeed and two cores. In comparison, the A7 chip found in the iPhone 5s or Retina iPad mini has a clockspeed of 1.3 GHz while the iPad Air has a 1.4 GHz clocked SoC. According to reports, the 64-bit dual-core architecture used in the A7 will otherwise remain virtually unchanged. It should be noted that despite having only two cores, the A7 outperforms many of the quad or octa-core competitors on the market because it is heavily optimized for iOS.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (TSMC) and Samsung are producing the chips for Apple in a joint venture.
