ARM gives a peek at what to expect from Cortex A53/A57

Big increases in performance are expected from ARM’s next-generation cores.

ARM’s Cortex A53 is still a few months over the horizon, and the Corex A57 is even further away as its not due until 2015, but that didn’t stop ARM from teasing attendees of its tech day with a preview of how both chips might perform.

Cortex A53 is ARM’s next-generation mid-range chip, powered by the 64-bit ARMv8 CPU core. As the graphs below illustrate, ARM says the A53 to be around 50 percent faster than the Cortex-A7, while hitting the same power levels. The A57, due next year, will be 50 percent faster than the Cortex-A15, but will have a much higher power draw. However, once these designs start being manufactured on the 20nm process node the power efficiency will start to pick up.





Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 410, 610, and 615 are said to use the Cortex-A53 CPU core, with the Snapdragon 808 and 810 using the A53 and A57 cores set up in a big.LITTLE configuration.

In the slide decks posted online ARM provided a number of Geekbench 3 benchmarks comparing the Cortex A57 to A15, both in 32-bit and 64-bit mode. However these synthetic benchmarks are based only on reference designs and are not entirely indicative of final performance.
