Alan Mulally to stay at Ford, Microsoft’s CEO search to continue into February

The software giant continues to look to internal as well as other external candidates, and is said to make a decision next month.

Ford’s current CEO and front-running candidate for Microsoft’s next CEO Alan Mulally announced that he would be staying at Ford, at least until the end of 2014. Microsoft originally intended to name a new CEO in the month of January, but that has now been pushed back to February.

A reason for the delay seems to be the unavailability of chairman Bill Gates, who is attending a conference in Davos on the 20th of January to outline various initiatives of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Gates is said to be very involved with the CEO search, with one source close to the situation stating that, “This is a Gates search, even though the board is very involved. But nothing is going to happen without him, especially since he will be much more involved in the company going forward.”

Shortlisted internal candidates being considered for CEO include Satya Nadella and Tony Bates, with Nokia’s ex-CEO Stephen Elop also being considered. Other candidates that Microsoft’s board is interested in include ex-VMware and current Pivotal CEO Paul Maritz and Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg.

Microsoft has an earnings call on the 23rd of January, and its board might decide to announce their final decision soon after that.
