Both good and bad news are cropping up for fans of fledgling mobile OS Tizen, as Samsung intends to showcase more advanced prototypes built on the platform next month despite commercial launches being reportedly postponed again.
It’s official, Samsung hasn’t abandoned Tizen… yet. Nor have at least some of its partners, including Korean wireless service providers SK Telecom, KT and LG U+. In fact, they’ve been working hard (hardly working?) on growing the highly anticipated Android and iOS rival of late, planning to share their fresh developments on the eve of February’s Mobile World Congress.
As such, on February 23 (one day ahead of the actual MWC start), Samsung will be holding a special invite-only event, where Tizen developers are to “learn about the major milestones that the project has hit since last year”.
Sounds vague, and probably not by chance, as a Samsung official has earlier this week gone on record to confirm the delay of previously planned releases “in the first half of this year in several countries, including Korea and Russia”.
Furthermore, Japan’s NTT DoCoMo also announced the indefinite shelving of Tizen plans just hours in advance of a January 16 event that was supposed to make the world’s first ever gadget running the operating system official.
Putting all of the puzzle’s pieces together, we thus know Tizen is still very much a work in progress and the year’s first half isn’t set to change the bleak status quo. So the most optimistic ETA is now July 2014. Hear that, Google? Your precious Android’s dominance is safe for a little while longer. Ah, who are we kidding? It’s safe period.
On a somewhat unrelated note, the confirmation of Samsung’s Tizen-focused pre-MWC event makes Galaxy S5′s imminent debut look, well, less imminent. Unless Samsung wants no spotlight whatsoever on Tizen.
