Tourist distracted by Facebook clumsily walks off a pier

Australian police had to rescue a tourist that fell off a pier because she was distracted by Facebook.

A tourist was so preoccupied with Facebook on her mobile phone that she unknowingly walked right off the St Kilda pier and plunged into the freezing cold water in Melbourne on Monday night.* Thankfully, a witness quickly notified the police and the clumsy Facebook user was rescued in time.

“She was still out in the water lying on her back in floating position because she told us later that she couldn’t swim,” said officer Dean Kelly.* “She still had her mobile phone in her hand and initially apologized and said sorry.”

Social networking and other forms of communication via a mobile device are quickly taking over the lives of many people.* Various surveys have indicated that most people have some sort of mobile devices within reach at all time.* Staying glued, however, to a mobile device may be detrimental to not only a person’s health but also their safety.

Imagine what the consequences would be if there were no one capable of rescuing the tourist when she plummeted into the frigid water?* Considering the woman reported that she couldn’t swim, we can’t imagine things turning out as well as it did for her.
