'GTA: San Andreas' hustles its way onto iOS

Rockstar Games announces that Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is now available for select iOS devices.

By porting the full game of GTA: San Andreas onto the mobile gaming sphere, Rockstar has given millions of gamers worldwide access to one of the most engaging (and controversial) titles of the PlayStation 2 era.

Gamers can now enjoy the 70+ hours of CJ’s rise to fame as a legendary gangster on-the-go, or just wreak havoc across the game’s three major open-world cities.

The only downside is that the game isn’t compatible with all iOS devices, and is only supported on the following:*iPhone 4s, iPhone 5, iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, iPod Touch 5th gen, iPad 2, 3rd and 4th generation, iPad Air, iPad Mini and iPad Mini with Retina Display.

San Andreas is available on the iTunes App Store for $6.99, and will take up 1.63 GB of memory. Additionally the game has been modified and enhanced to make it specifically compatible with mobile devices, and some of the more noteworthy changes include:

  • Re-mastered, high-resolution graphics including lighting enhancements, an enriched color palette and improved character models

  • Dynamic detailed shadows and real-time environmental reflections (iPhone 5 series/iPad 4th Gen and above)

  • Physical controller support for all Made-for-iOS controllers

  • Cloud save support for playing across all of your iOS devices for Rockstar Social Club Members

  • Updated checkpoint system

  • Dual analog stick controls for full camera and movement control

  • Three different touch control schemes and customizable controls

While San Andreas is fully playable with touch-screen controls, you’d be better of picking up a Bluetooth controller–or maybe an OTG cord–for those tough missions where finesse and control is key. The controls can be awkward and finicky to get used to, so getting a hold of a controller may be your best bet.

It’ll be interesting to see if this mobile version will be the uncensored version, but all-in-all the game is intact and those unforgettable characters (including the crazy drug-addled ramblings of The Truth) and missions are included.

For those of you who don’t have an iPhone, Rockstar Games has confirmed that Android, Amazon Kindle and Windows Mobile versions of San Andreas are coming later this month:
“Hey guys, it’s great to see so much excitement for the release of San Andreas on mobile. For those inquiring about Android and Windows Phones versions, those will be available later this month, stay tuned to the Rockstar Newswire for more details soon.”

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is now available for select iOS devices on the iTunes App Store for $6.99, and will soon be crossing over to select Android, Amazon Kindle and Windows Mobile devices. For more information please visit Rockstar’s official website.
