Nokia Lumia 929 for Verizon rumored to break cover as Lumia Icon on January 16

The long rumored and up until recently highly anticipated 5-inch version of the Nokia Lumia 1520, supposedly dubbed Lumia 929, has again been “delayed”, and now looks bound to hit the ground running in January.

January 16, to be specific, although the new deadline has to be taken with a great deal of the proverbial salt. And not just because we’ve had so many alleged ETAs fall through so far. But even the source of this new tidbit, WP Central, seems unsure of its reliability, calling it “subject to change”.

So we’re back to square one once again? As far as timelines go, yes, but not in terms of specs and branding. Only here’s the kicker. The Verizon-exclusive Lumia 929 may not be called Lumia 929 after all, if we are to trust WP Central and probably the most reliable industry insider, Twitter guru @evleaks.

According to them both, Nokia is pondering a change of pace and might look to christen the diminutive 1520 with the Lumia Icon moniker. Sounds… spiritual and whatnot. But is that really for the best? Hard to say, what’s clear is the market name won’t make much of a difference if Nokia and Verizon put off the launch any longer.

Think about it, January 16 is a date sandwiched between CES and MWC, with both expos expected to bring to light new and exciting Androids powered by improved Snapdragon 800 chips and sporting fancy 2K displays and so on. Meanwhile, the Icon’s list of features is aging and I’m afraid it can’t stand the test of time. Or can it? Take a look below and sound off in the comments section.

Lumia Icon rumored specs:

  • 5-inch 1,080p AMOLED screen

  • Quad-core 2.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 CPU

  • 2 GB RAM

  • 32 GB built-in storage

  • Windows Phone 8

  • 2,510 mAh battery

  • 20 MP PureView rear camera with dual LED flash

  • NFC, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0

  • Qi wireless charging

  • HAAC microphones
