No need to be sad about Nokia Lumia 2020’s very probable cancellation, as it merely means Microsoft wants to gamble everything on the Surface Mini and thus make it one for the history books.
How? Well, for one thing, Redmond is said to be working on integrating Kinect-like motion sensing technology on the future 8-inch tablet. You know, gesture recognition, face tracking and scanning, the whole shebang.
Now granted, Samsung actually made the first steps in that direction in the mobile landscape, with Galaxy S4 and Note 3’s Air Gestures, however the Koreans still have a lot of sweat and tears to put into both their hardware and software before we can call the technology fully mature.
Meanwhile, WP Dang, a Chinese website known for breaking exclusive (and legit) Microsoft-related stories, claims Surface Mini’s somatosensory system will be smooth as silk. Can you picture it? Controlling your slate without actually touching it. Sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie, huh?
Unfortunately, rumor still has it the Surface Mini is to run Windows RT (8.1), which might be a massive deal-breaker for some. Plus, there’s no Intel Bay Trail chip on the horizon, but rather an ARM-based unit, possibly one of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 chips. Please, MS, at least get the S805.
Back on the bright side, the Surface Mini should cram a whole lot of pixels in that petite display, as it’ll offer Full HD resolution for a ppi superior than on the 10-inch Nokia Lumia 2520 or 10.6-inch Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2.

Ultimately, it’ll all come down to pricing, no matter how fancy the motion sensors on the 8-incher. Timing may mean a lot too, so the sooner and cheaper this launches, the better its odds of making waves. Who’s with me?
