Man dies of heart attack while carrying Olympic torch

A torchbearer for the Sochi 2014 Winter Games suffered a heart attack while carrying the Olympic torch.

73-year-old Vadim Gorbenko, a Greco-Roman wrestling coach, died recently after walking 150 meters in his hometown of Kurgan.* After completing the short walk and press shoot, Gorbenko said that he wasn’t feeling well.* He was taken to the hospital, where he would eventually die as doctors could not save him.

The four-month torch relay across Russia has been met with multiple obstacles and mishaps.* The Olympic flame, which should stay lit during its journey and when it gets passed on at each leg of the relay, has gone out multiple times. *Last month, Russia also sent the torch into space, where cosmonauts took the unlit torch for a spacewalk.

If all goes according to plan, the flame should end up in Sochi on February 7.* Hopefully the last leg doesn’t experience any type of life-threatening complications, and that the torch arrives lit with the Olympic flame.
