BBM to come pre-installed on LG smartphones, starting with the LG G Pro Lite

BlackBerry has managed to court LG into pre-installing BlackBerry Messenger on its smartphones.*

The first LG phone to offer BBM out of the box will the G Pro Lite, a cheaper variant of LG’s G Pro flagship, sometime “soon,” though the Canadian company didn’t reveal which other LG handsets would be graced by the inbuilt presence of BlackBerry’s resurgent messaging platform. As before, BBM will continue to remain available for free from the Google Play Store as well, not that anyone was expecting that to change anyway.

“BBM is widely used throughout the Middle East, Africa and Indonesia where smartphone users tend to engage heavily in social networking. The LG G Pro Lite offers an optimized BBM experience with its large, high quality display and embedded Stylus Pen,” said Kevin Shin, Vice President of Marketing for Asia, the Middle East and CIS countries of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company.

The move to pre-load BBM on non-BlackBerry smartphones should help the ailing company keep at least one of its previous strongholds alive and kicking – BBM has already found solid footing among Android and iOS users since it was launched on the two platforms, and a pre-installed version on some phones running on the world’s most popular mobile operating system might just be what BBM needs to make a stand against competing messaging platforms like WhatsApp.
